Will y su negativo won’t son verbos modales que se utilizan junto a un verbo principal para formar el futuro simple (future simple), que es uno de los tiempos futuros que existe en inglés.

Will y won’t, como todos los verbos modales, son invariables, es decir, no cambian su conjugación según el pronombre. Por ejemplo: I will do it. / Mary will do it.

Estructura del futuro simple

El futuro simple tiene la siguiente estructura:

Sujeto + will / won’t + verbo infinitivo

Por ejemplo:

• I will be late. / Llegaré tarde.
• You will remember this beautiful moment forever. / Recordarás este bello momento por siempre.
• He / She will send the information right away. / Enviará la información enseguida.

Usos de will y won’t

Will y won’t se utilizan para expresar:

• Acciones espontáneas, que se deciden en el momento en el que se está hablando. Por ejemplo: It’s raining; I will take a taxi. / Está lloviendo; tomaré un taxi.
• Predicciones futuras, junto a expresiones de opinión (I think, I hope, I’m sure). Por ejemplo: I think there will be a third world war. / Creo que habrá una tercera guerra mundial. Para expresar una predicción futura en negativo, se utiliza “I don’t think” + will (y no I think + won’t).
• Eventos futuros, que no están agendados ni indiquen un objetivo. Por ejemplo: The building will have 40 stories. / El edificio tendrá 40 pisos.
• Posibilidades futuras junto a los siguientes adverbios: probably, likely, possibly. Por ejemplo: I will probably come with you. / Probablemente yo vaya contigo.
• Resultados de condiciones probables, en oraciones condicionales tipo 1. Por ejemplo: If it rains, I will stay at home. / Si llueve, me quedaré en casa.

Otros usos de will y won’t

Will y won’t, como verbos modales, pueden expresar (además de futuro) distintos significados, dependiendo del contexto:

• Ofrecimientos. Por ejemplo: I’ll help you carry that heavy box. / Te ayudaré a llevar esa caja pesada.
• Promesas. Por ejemplo: I’ll study more for the next test. / Estudiaré más para el próximo exámen.
• Pedidos. Por ejemplo: Will you open the door for me, please? / ¿Abrirías la puerta por mí, por favor?
• Voluntad. Por ejemplo: Will you marry me? / ¿Te quieres casar conmigo?
• Negativa. Por ejemplo: The elevator won’t start. / El ascensor no quiere arrancar.
• Irritación. Por ejemplo: Will you stop whistling, please! / ¡Puedes dejar de silbar, por favor!
• Hábitos. Por ejemplo: My sister will read for hours. / Mi hermana suele leer durante horas.

Para formular preguntas con will y won’t se sigue la estructura:

Por ejemplo: Will you come?

De ser necesaria una palabra interrogativa (wh word), esta va antes de will/ won’t. Por ejemplo: What will you do?

Respuestas cortas: Para responder a preguntas sí / no, se utilizan will o won’t según corresponda, sin repetir el verbo principal. Las respuestas cortas afirmativas no se pueden contraer. Por ejemplo: Will you try? Yes, I will. (Y no: Yes, I will try).
