«Indirect questions» en inglés

Las indirect questions o preguntas indirectas en inglés se utilizan para formular preguntas, pedir ayuda o requerir información de manera educada y amable. Siempre comienzan con una frase introductoria, como Can you tell me … ? o Do you know …? Por ejemplo:

• Pregunta indirecta: Could you tell me where Teatro Colón is? / ¿Me podría decir dónde queda el Teatro Colón?
• Pregunta directa: Where is Teatro Colón? / ¿Dónde queda el Teatro Colón?

A diferencia de las preguntas directas en inglés (wh- questions y yes-no questions), las indirect questions siguen la estructura y el orden de las oraciones afirmativas, es decir, no hacen la inversión entre el sujeto y el verbo. Por ejemplo:

• Where can I exchange some money? (pregunta directa)
• Could you tell me where I can exchange some money? (pregunta indirecta)

¿Para qué se usan las indirect questions?

Las indirect questions se utilizan en contextos donde se requiere hacer preguntas de manera más amable y educada. Sobre todo en ocasiones en las que las preguntas directas o direct questions pueden sonar demasiado “directas” o descorteses.

Las indirect questions se utilizan:

• Con un interlocutor desconocido. Sirven para hacer una pregunta educada en la calle, por ejemplo, para requerir información o pedir ayuda. Suelen ir precedidas de la expresión “excuse me”. Por ejemplo: Excuse me, do you know if there is a pharmacy near here? / Disculpe, ¿sabe si hay una farmacia cerca de aquí?
• Con un interlocutor conocido. Sirven para pedir un favor importante o para preguntar sobre un tema delicado y evitar sonar descortés. Por ejemplo: I was wondering if you could lend me your car. / Me preguntaba si me podrías prestar tu automóvil.

¿Cómo hacer preguntas indirectas en inglés?

Las indirect questions:

1. Siempre empiezan con una frase introductoria:

• Could / Can you tell me … ? / Me podrías / puedes decir … ?
• Do you know …? / ¿Sabes … ?
• Do you have any idea? / ¿Tienes alguna idea … ?
• Do you happen to know? / ¿Por casualidad sabes … ?
• May I ask … ? / ¿Puedo preguntar … ?
• Can you explain … ? / ¿Puedes explicar … ?
• I’d like to know … / Quisiera saber …
• I’m not sure … / No estoy seguro …

2. No hacen la inversión entre el sujeto y el verbo, a diferencia del resto de las preguntas en inglés. Siguen el orden de las afirmaciones: sujeto + verbo. Por ejemplo: Can you tell me where Peter is? (Y no: Can you tell me where is Peter?)

1. Llevan el verbo conjugado en el tiempo verbal correspondiente, al igual que las afirmaciones. No utilizan los auxiliares do, does, did en el present simple y past simple. La estructura es:
   
   Frase introductoria + wh- word o if + sujeto + verbo conjugado
   
   Por ejemplo: Do you know how much it costs? (Y no: Do you know how much does it cost?)

2. Llevan una wh- word o adverbio interrogativo con las wh- questions (preguntas que requieren información como respuesta) y llevan if (o whether)con las yes-no questions (preguntas que requieren un “sí” o un “no” como respuesta). Por ejemplo:

• Do you have any idea where she lives? / ¿Tienes alguna idea de dónde vive? (wh- question)
• Can you tell me if you like it? / ¿Puedes decirme si te gusta? (yes-no question)

3. Pueden ser seguidas de to + infinitive luego de la wh- word y luego de if o whether. Por ejemplo: Do you have any idea how to do it? / ¿Tienes alguna idea de cómo hacerlo?

4. No llevan signo de interrogación al final si comienzan con una frase afirmativa y no con una frase en forma de pregunta (I wonder…, I don’t know…, I’m not sure…). Por ejemplo: I was wondering if you could put me up for the weekend. / Me preguntaba si me puedes dar alojamiento por el fin de semana.

Para tener en cuenta: La estructura y el orden de las indirect questions se utilizan en las preguntas en reported speech y siempre que una frase introductoria de cualquier tipo anteceda al adverbio interrogativo o if. Por ejemplo: I didn’t understand what he said. (Y no: I didn’t understand what did he say?)
