El past continuous es un tiempo verbal que se utiliza para expresar acciones en progreso en el pasado. Por ejemplo: I was studying earlier in the morning. / Estaba estudiando más temprano por la mañana.

El past continuous es el pasado del present continuous (presente continuo). Por ejemplo:

• Present continuous. Por ejemplo: I’m washing the dishes now. / Estoy lavando los platos ahora.
• Past continuous. Por ejemplo: I was washing the dishes earlier today. / Estaba lavando los platos hoy más temprano.

Usos del past continuous

El past continuous se utiliza para expresar:

• Acciones en progreso que fueron interrumpidas por una acción corta en past simple. Por ejemplo: He was cooking when the telephone rang. / Él estaba cocinando cuando sonó el teléfono.
• Descripciones de situaciones y contextos en el pasado que son el marco de una historia. Por ejemplo: The sun was shining and the birds were singing. / El sol estaba brillando y los pájaros estaban cantando.
• Acciones que transcurrieron simultáneamente con otra acción. Por ejemplo: I was working while my mother was reading in the garden. / Yo estaba trabajando mientras que mi mamá estaba leyendo en el jardín.
• Acciones en progreso en un tiempo específico en el pasado. Estas acciones largas ocurrieron antes, durante, y probablemente se extendieron hasta después de la referencia de tiempo mencionada. Por ejemplo: I was having a shower at 8 this morning. / Estaba tomando una ducha a las 8 esta mañana.

El past continuous es un tiempo compuesto que se forma con el auxiliar was / were + el verbo en ing. Sigue la estructura:

Sujeto	was / were	verbo + ing

Por ejemplo: She was running in the park. / Ella estaba corriendo en el parque.

Estructura negativa del past continuous

Sujeto	wasn’t / weren’t	verbo + ing
I He She It	wasn’t	working

Por ejemplo: They weren’t working in Canada during the 1990s. / No estuvieron trabajando en Canadá durante los 90.

Estructura interrogativa del past continuous

La estructura interrogativa del past continuous se forma anteponiendo el auxiliar was / were al sujeto, según corresponda:

¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre past continuous y past simple?

PAST SIMPLE	PAST CONTINUOUS
Trata las acciones pasadas como hechos puntuales. I watched a soccer match last night.	Les da tiempo y duración a las acciones pasadas. I was watching TV last night.
Expresa acciones cortas. John arrived late.	Expresa una acción larga en progreso cuando una acción corta la interrumpió. She was sleeping when the telephone rang.
Enumera acciones que sucedieron de manera consecutiva en el pasado. I got up at 7 in the morning. I had a shower and then I had breakfast.	Expresa acciones que transcurrieron de manera simultánea, en paralelo. Jenny was having a bath and Tommy was washing the dishes.
Si se utiliza una referencia de tiempo larga, el past simple indica que la acción comenzó y concluyó. I read a book during the flight to London.	El uso de past continuous expresa que la acción transcurrió durante un período, pero no se terminó hasta un tiempo después. I was reading a book during the flight to London.
Se utiliza junto a los llamados stative verbs (verbos que expresan un estado: love, like, believe). James loved his family all his life.
